A Heritage Proposal in Skye: Tristan and Gabby’s Sunset Engagement at Duntulm Castle

There is an undeniable magic to the Scottish Highlands, but standing on the windswept cliffs of the Trotternish Peninsula with an ancient castle behind you takes it to another level. When Tristan and Gabby reached out about documenting their proposal on the Isle of Skye, I knew this would be a once-in-a-lifetime shoot. This wasn't just a picturesque location choice—it was a deeply personal return to Tristan's ancestral roots.

Honoring Clan MacDonald

For Tristan, choosing Duntulm Castle as the setting to ask Gabby to marry him was deeply meaningful. The ruined fortress once served as the seat of Clan MacDonald of Sleat during the 16th and 17th centuries. Incorporating that rich family heritage into the moment brought incredible depth to the day:

  • The MacDonald Tartan Wrap: Gabby wore a dark green, navy, and red Clan MacDonald tartan wrap against her white dress, beautifully tying her into the family history overlooking the sea.

  • Ancient Castle Ruins: The crumbling stone arches and cliffside walls of Duntulm Castle provided a dramatic, storybook backdrop that felt carved straight out of Scottish legend.

  • Historic Memorial Marks: Posing near the historic MacArthurs Cairn monument near the castle grounds anchored their milestone to the storied history of the Isle.

The Location: Duntulm Castle, Isle of Skye

Perched high on the northernmost tip of the Trotternish peninsula, Duntulm Castle looks out over the choppy waters of the Minch toward the Outer Hebrides. As the evening sun broke through the overcast Highland clouds, it cast a warm, golden haze across the grassy headlands and ancient stone masonry.

Highland Romance & Unscripted Moments

Beyond the breathtaking scenery, what made this session unforgettable was the sheer emotion between Tristan and Gabby. From the quiet moment when Tristan dropped to one knee amidst the castle walls to the laughter and forehead kisses as the Scottish wind swept past, every photograph feels timeless.

As a destination wedding and proposal photographer, capturing these raw, authentic connections in places that hold genuine meaning for my clients is what drives everything I do.
